A Dress, A Song, and a Reminder of Why It Matters
“Moments like this is why RISE exists.” - Meghan Simpson
At RISE Foundation, we often say that meeting practical needs can change a life—but sometimes, it also reveals something even deeper: dignity, confidence, and joy.
One of our volunteers recently shared a moment that captures this perfectly.
She met a young single mother living in a shelter who needed a dress for her school choir concert. What started as a simple request quickly became something more. Together, they found not just the perfect dress, but additional items for her and her son—small things that made a big difference.
As the mother tried on the dress, her gratitude was immediate. But what happened next was unforgettable.
Right there, in the middle of the moment, she began to sing.
Just a portion of her choir song—but it filled the space. It was joyful. Confident. Alive.
It was a glimpse of who she is beyond her circumstances.
Moments like this are why RISE exists.
Serving more than 35,000 children and families impacted by foster care in Los Angeles County, RISE Foundation provides essential resources—everything from clothing and beds to everyday necessities—helping ease transitions and improve living conditions for children, youth, and families navigating foster care.
But it’s not just about the items.
It’s about restoring dignity.
It’s about reminding someone they are seen.
It’s about creating moments where hope feels real again.
Because sometimes, a dress isn’t just a dress.
Sometimes, it’s a stage.
A voice.
A reminder that someone still believes in you.
And that can change everything.
