Grandmother preparing her home for grandchildren entering kinship care

Keeping Families Together: How One Grandmother Answered the Call

May 12, 20261 min read

Gloria is a grandmother who received an unexpected call that her grandchildren had been removed from their home and needed immediate placement. Her home was completely unprepared for a group of children ranging from toddlers to teenagers, and she was living on a limited fixed income.

At RISE, we were able to schedule an appointment for the very next day to provide her with the bedding, car seats, and safety items required for her home to be established as a kinship care placement. For Gloria, being able to also take home enough toiletries for everyone in the household brought additional relief, as she was overwhelmed by the expense of caring for everyone during the gap between the children entering her home and financial supportbecoming available through the kinship care system.

As a result of the quick response from RISE, her grandchildren were able to stay together and remain with family as they navigated a time of instability.
